| The
Open MIC (Music Industry Connection) Project |
| The
Open MIC Project was created to provide young people with an opportunity to
learn about various aspects of the music industry from professionals in the
field. The core of the project is the creative process (composition,
songwriting, performance and improvisation). Using this as a jumping off point,
students are connected to the industry through direct contact with and
observation of working professionals. |
|
| Bertelsmann's
World of Expression |
| The
Bertelsmann World of Expression Scholarship Program was created to inspire and
acknowledge student composers from New York City High Schools. Thomas Bellino
and Jerome Korman of Planet Arts have been involved in the development of this
program since its inception over a decade ago and have created a series of
outreach workshops that guide students through the creative process and provide
technical assistance to music teachers throughout the city. |
|
| GRAMMY's
in the Schools |
| For
several years Planet Arts has been representing Bertelsmann's World of
Expression as part of the GRAMMY's In the Schools program. The adapted workshop
format includes an ensemble of musicians, writers and producers and provides
students with an in-depth look at the music industry and an opportunity to
express their musical ideas. |

| Region
9 Music Landscape Project |
| The
Planet Arts Musical Landscape project is designed to work in collaboration with
the Arts Office of Region Nine of the New York City Department of Education. The
primary focus is to assist in the development of a comprehensive, unified
musical landscape. The goal is to achieve a complete music program school by
school and a seamless working module for K through 12 music education in the
Region.
On-going professional development workshops focus on
strategies for teaching and improving student musical skills as well as
providing essential resources and techniques to support music educators. |
|
| Precepts
of Swing |
| Precepts
of Swing was designed for and in collaboration with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
The focus of the workshop/performance program is to share the orchestra’s
talent, expertise and vision in the nurturing of young jazz players as well as
to pass on the musical concepts of founding members Thad Jones and Mel Lewis.
The program has been implemented in New York City high schools, colleges and
universities across the nation and as part of cultural exchange programs in
Europe, Mexico, Tunisia and Egypt. |
|
| Crossing
Paths |
| Crossing
Paths is a cultural exchange project with the goal of establishing and
sustaining artistic relationships with artists, educators, students and
institutions from various parts of the world. The aim is to construct creative
bridges which will: allow for a unique exchange of ideas and methods, explore
music from other cultures, expand the American music vocabulary, create new
work, harmonize music and rhythm from other cultures with regional concepts of
American music. The global fusion will display classic American music
interacting with its world counterparts providing a unique opportunity for
artists, educators and students to further understand the origins and depth of
the creative process. |
|
| Composition
in the Classroom |
| The
Planet Arts Composition and Songwriting workshop is a "standards"
based journey into the world of music. The basic elements of music are
introduced and immediately utilized in such a way that student’s of all ages
are able to create original compositions. By exploring the relationship of words
to music the Planet Arts Workshop embraces curriculum integration, promotes
literacy and provides a connection between music and a variety of subject matter
pertinent to the student, teacher and school. |
